Construction is now well underway
on the new Modatek plant, the third Magna International facility in Milton, on
lands on the south side of Highway 401. The Modatek building is nearly 500,000
sq. ft. and will employ over 600 people by 2002. This compliments and augments
Milton’s already-strong automotive sector industry which is also represented by
SKD, Johnson Controls, Meritor and more.
The Town of Milton has called for
tenders for the Phase One of three phases of reconstruction of Main Street in
the Central Business District. The first phase will see the complete replacement
and realignment of the street, sidewalks, on-street parking and landscaping
within the historic downtown. The $1.7 million project will take place from
March to June 2002. This is just one new capital project in a Town Budget that
has seen capital spending increase 140+% to $15.2 million from 1999 to 2001, as
the Town and the Region meet commitments to meet the growth needs of Milton.
Housing
Availability
With the completion of Milton’s
new water and wastewater servicing, Milton is experiencing an unprecedented
housing boom. Residential housing permits skyrocketed 900% from 145 in 1999 to
1500+ in 2001. The major new home builders including Mattamy Homes, Greenpark,
Falconcrest, Milton Heritage Homes, Coscorp and Touchstone Homes, are providing
a complete cross section of housing from townhomes and semi’s to executive
single family dwellings. With hundreds of new residents moving in every month,
the financial impact on local business has been very positive. The new attention
being drawn to Milton has spilled over into the resale market as well, both in
town and in new and resale rural estate subdivision homes. Milton’s overall
residential growth rate is now approaching 13% per year making it one of the
fastest growing communities in Ontario.
